About This Project

The Liberty Street Loft is nestled within the historic 55 Liberty Street building, an edifice that briefly held the distinction of being Manhattan’s tallest before the Woolworth Building surpassed it by a slight margin. This loft emerges from the combination of two modest 1980s-era studio apartments within this storied structure, offering a living space that thoughtfully interweaves the echoes of its past with the comforts of contemporary urban life.

Design Concept

At the heart of the project is a desire to pay homage to the building’s intriguing history while providing a functional living space. This loft cherishes the remnants of the original office building, including fragments of marble flooring, window frames, and other artifacts of the old Sinclair Oil Company’s headquarters uncovered from a previous hastily executed residential conversion.

Key Design Elements

Preserved Marble Flooring: Original marble flooring fragments are carefully preserved. These restored marble tiles are poignant reminders of the building’s historical significance, offset by new polished concrete floors.

Open Layout

The amalgamation of two studio apartments has given rise to an open and welcoming floor plan well-suited for contemporary living. The loft comprises a generous living and dining area, a functional kitchen, and spaces designated for relaxation and work.

Historical Accents

To honor the building’s heritage, the design incorporates exposed structural elements such as steel columns and terracotta tile facade elements, lending character and authenticity to the space.

Custom Millwork

Custom-crafted cabinetry and storage solutions have been thoughtfully integrated to optimize small-space functionality while ensuring an uncluttered atmosphere. These additions blend seamlessly with the loft’s historical elements.

The Liberty Street Loft is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of history and modernity. Born from the union of two modest studio apartments within the iconic 55 Liberty Street building, this architectural endeavor rekindles the spirit of a bygone era. It reverently preserves and showcases the remnants of the original office building while providing a comfortable and contemporary living space, paying humble tribute to the building’s rich history. This unassuming loft serves as a reminder of New York City’s architectural heritage and the timeless appeal of its historical treasures.
